Surgical Oncology in Bangalore: Common Questions

Surgical oncology is the branch of cancer care that treats tumours with surgery. Dr. Dinesh MG plans cancer surgeries with medical oncology and radiation oncology colleagues, so each patient gets one treatment plan. These are the questions patients ask most often.

Do oncologists do surgery?

Some do. A surgical oncologist is a surgeon with superspeciality training in cancer surgery (MCh), who removes tumours and nearby lymph nodes. A medical oncologist treats cancer with chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, and a radiation oncologist treats it with radiation therapy. Many patients see all three, as one team.

How do I know if I need a surgical oncologist?

Usually when a scan or biopsy shows a growth that may be cancer, when cancer has been confirmed and surgery is being considered, or when you want a second opinion on a surgery plan. For many solid tumours found early, surgery is the main treatment.

Do all cancer patients need chemotherapy?

No. It depends on the type and stage of cancer. Some cancer patients need only surgery, some need chemotherapy or radiation before or after surgery, and some are treated without surgery. The treatment plan is made for each patient after the biopsy and scans.

Are there side effects of cancer surgery?

Like any operation, cancer surgeries carry risks such as pain, bleeding, infection and effects that depend on the organ treated. Keyhole (laparoscopic) and robotic surgery are used where safe because they usually mean less pain and a faster recovery. The likely benefits and risks are explained before you decide.

Where does Dr. Dinesh MG see patients?
